Music to the Moon
In response to the content of Tales of Mu, I'll agree with Phuong that it's adults-only and only then some people will get weirded out. That said, the characterisation and plot development is excellent. It really is that good. That's why I read it. And that will probably why I'll continue to read it.
As for the Xbox 360, I'm well aware of the hardware issues that the console has. And while I'm very much a PC person, I can see the beauty of the consoles. You don't have to worry about whether the game is going to run or not, you pop it in and play. That said, right now, the Xbox 360 in my opinion, has the better software. Sure the Wii is very fun, but there isn't a game that screams to me to buy it. There is a lot of reasons to buy one, but not one that burns me to get a Wii. And while the PS3 will have some killer software, namely Killzone 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4, it's really expensive and out of my price range. Games that I want to play are on the Xbox 360: Halo 3, Mass Effect, Too Human, Warhound and probably a few more to come. But I'll keep your advice in mind Jimmy.
A few days of rain have made driving a little more pissy than usual. It's raining hard, I have the wipers burning at full speed, headlights on, going slow-ish at 50 and I have some jerk tailgating me. But this person was right behind me, maybe a meter or so. If I had to brake suddenly then no doubt the car would have been rear ended. Leave a freaking gap, so you damage our cars and I don't have to worry.
Anyway, my mother was working overtime and I had to go to pick up my brother from school. So I'm standing there, drinking some Coke and listening (or eavesdropping) on a bunch of Viet parents discussing how to praise their children. One of the mothers was wondering whether she should praise her child is they got a test score of 98, knowing another student managed 100%. In my mind, I was like "Well of course you praise them!", but the other parents were like confused and didn't know what to do. One father actually flat out said that there should be no praise. I actually got kinda pissed at that. 98% in any subject is a pretty good mark, no, an excellent mark. What, are you actually going to say to your child when they come home with a 98% mark "What the..? Where's the other 2%?".
I actually jumped in at that point and made my disagreement known. 100% is an excellent mark and all, but it's more important that you tried your best. Not everyone is equal, and there will be students who only get average marks. I was never that good at maths. 4U would kill me. But I did my best at 3U. I think my point got across to most of the parents. They were nodding and going "well that makes sense". Except the aforementioned father who started dissing me and saying that its 100% or nothing and asking "how would I know about praise?". I politely told him that I used to be Sefton student and used to have the 100% or nothing shit leveled at me. Then I told him, very politely, that he knew shit about the education system and raising kids. That was a conversation stopper, and before he mounted a counterattack it started to rain and everyone retreated to their cars.
Back in the car, I had a little reflection time. Most of the parents were stunned probably not due the insults, but more that I could talk and phrase coherent sentences in Viet. I'm not going to say that I have excellent Viet, but I can hold a lengthy conversation. And eavesdrop on conversations. That said I felt rather lucky that my own father started to recognise that 100% or nothing can have a negative affect and switched to a more "do your best and look after your future" praise.
I don't know if those Viet parents will change, but I hope they do.
And yes I've played and finished Elite Beat Agents on the DS. It's wild.

I would have absolutely loved to have been there. talk about fucking standards. my parents don't directly say '100% or nothing' but i feel they mean it nonetheless. it would be judgemental of me to not mention that they have their own stresses and whatnot (first generation migrants, working class etc) so obviously, i couldn't do what you did. well, not to people i know anyway.
and hell, i love surprising them like that too. usually, if i meet viet people when i go out, i just act dumb and pretend not to understand. actually, same with viet relatives. but they've come to realise that i do understand what they're saying (i got caught out once when they were telling this really dirty joke and my stoned face cracked up ...) so the ones who know me well don't gossip in front of me anymore.
taught them a lesson. i'm like an undercover spy for my parents, 'hey mom ... did you know ... '. HAHA. suckers.
im stuck on elite beat divas =(
and yeah. if i told my mum i came second in something shed be like 'why didnt you come first?' but like your dad, she realised eventually that peed me off.
and in response to jimmys comment, microsoft actually makes a loss for each 360 console it sells. and you probably wouldnt feel ripped off because it is an excellent multimedia centre rather than just a console.
the only major problem that i can think of, steven, is the red lights appearing on 360s. theyve become a major issue, hence microsoft extending their warranty to three years. i've had a lot of returns of 360s at eb, like this one guy returned his 3 times. if i were you i'd wait a little bit and make sure that if you do buy a 360, its not one of those defective ones.
but in saying that theres no guarantee that it wont be defective. but waiting a little for the newer versions of the console, or the 360 elite, would be better. (the elites going to go at 700 i think? with a 120 gig hard drive).
halo 3s coming out in september, 20th i think. preorder now! at merrylands eb!

Why is everybody leaving such lengthy comments? I shall leave a lengthy one too then. Yay conformity.
My parents are the "try your best" type but my dad always adds "but you could have tried harder" and then lectures me on my bad studying habits etc etc. He doesn't imply that its 100% or nothing though.
My Viet isn't superpro. It's pretty basic, so if I dared to jump into an argument with Viet parents, I probably wouldn't last long and they'd take my silence to mean my defeat, when in fact I just can't articulate anything. lol.
Aren't Wii games superduper expensive? Oh but I don't know how much Xbox games are.
You should leave a gap of 3 seconds between you and the next car when driving, guy-who-was-tailgating-steven, and I think 4 seconds on wet days.
Keep in mind that while I was stating my case I wasn't insulting the guy directly (more like indirectly) and that I was being super polite about it. I think that if I was a bit more forceful, the message would have sank in better. But I don't think I can be forceful to adults anyway. The way I was raised and taught to speak Viet was to always respect adults. Which kinda sucks since I was talking to this international Viet student and I probably came off as rather formal to her.
Serena, yeah, I'm fully aware of the hardware issues of the Xbox 360. so that's why I'm taking a wait and see approach. Hopefully, everyone else will buy the old 360s and they'll phase in the new ones.
2057 was on SBS! Really made you think - heaps of ethical issues came up in it. I thought performing surgery in mid-air was way-cool. lol.
I've never tried arguing in Vietnamese with someone before (parents are an exception). The only times I've ever really talked to strangers in Viet is when I saw a helpless little old lady who didn't know how to buy a train ticket. *go me* LOL.
And I used to do what Phuong did when I was little - hence gathering a pretty comprehensive background knowledge of ...what goes on in other people's lives? LOL.
As for the parents who had to seek out other parents to decide whether to praise their kid or not for 98% - I really don't know what to say to that. Except maybe O_______O, or T______T. Either way.
My parents were always the 'do-what-you-will-but-we'll-be-keeping-an-eye-on -you' kind.
my vietnamese is pretty good (i think) considering i didn't go viet school or anything. but i'm north, so i'll still sound weird to you land. and the second hand viet that we've learnt over here means that seriously, if you went back to vn and talked to people there you'll still offend them somehow. they're very sensitive people. i've offended plenty of international students and visiting relos. my parents mean to say stop but they only end up laughing or nodding in agreement because i'm just saying what they think.
should stop though since i'm getting to an age where slips of tongue are taken a bit more seriously because i'm supposed to be old enough to know better. pft. try and stop me you old bags with nothing better to do but belittle your children and boast about your life savings (meanwhile, asking for money from my parents)
...i have very little affection for my relos from vn.
mite i remind you steven that the people who make the xbox, are the people who make pc games.
the xbox is simply a PC put into solid state packaging. like you said, gmaes are just pop it in and it plays - xbox doesn't support that feature well.
the ps2 has been around for 7 years, if you compare the graphics now to 2000, you will see a huge difference - thats because of the new programming, shading and engines that have made this possible.
xbox runs on an inferior system, just like a PC - you have to update your graphics every year to even handle the newest games, it won't be long because xbox reaches its maximum capacity.
and if you wanna talk about a multimedia center - then ps3 is all you need to know. ps3 supports the AVCHD codec which is ur new blue ray discs - all HD cams use this new codec, and a stand alone blueray player costs $1000
the xbox 360 can't even play HD DVD
the ps3 also comes with a complete set of card readers + usb readers.
you can also access your ps3 from any wireless network within your house
2 things which the xbox360 will never support.
what else can i say, ps3 is sony.
and the reason why xbox360 states that it is losing money is because it has transfered all its profits into reserves to fix "defective 360's"
and because xbox tries to employ a dominant market strategy by flooding the market with so many below cost xbox's that the overhead costs will be reduced to nothing. but so far that hasn't worked which means the xbox online gaming will soon collapse.
being a future teacher, i am so proud of you!! ^^
